Exploring Freiburg im Breisgau on Foot

When we visited Freiburg im Breisgau in the southwest of Germany on a hot Sunday afternoon, the town was bustling with people despite the fact that all the stores were closed. Except for the crowds seated outside the restaurants, cafe and bars, tourists had their eyes and cameras focused towards the ground.

I soon realised why they looked so weird – they were marvelling at the town’s famous street gutters (Bächle in german), and the well-kept cobblestone streets.

It was nice watching children pull their wooden boats along the Bächle, until I saw toddlers sitting butt-naked in the water. Don’t worry, water from the Dreisam river is said to flow through these street gutters (so no little mutant ninja turtles), but what disturbed me was their nudity (I really can’t wrap my head around their FKK).

Freiburg is a pleasant place to hang out when the sun is out. The town is pretty, clean and compact, making it an ideal place to explore on foot. However, I highly recommend taking a water bottle with you when you’re out (unless you don’t mind getting ripped off). The water from the town’s fountains were ok to drink.
